Introducing the CoRE
Learning Model
The CoRE Learning Model (CLM) engages students in practical, real-world, curriculum-aligned learning. Built on the WA Earth Science curriculum and guided by our CARMA framework (Contextual, Authentic, Relevant, Meaningful, and Applicable Learning), students work in workplace-style business units to simulate mining operations, design energy solutions, and address authentic challenges.
Supported by trained educators, hands-on field trips, and industry mentors, our project-based learning approach equips students with practical STEM skills and a direct pathway to local industry careers.
The CoRE Learning Model integrates real industry challenges into the curriculum. It allows students to engage with practical problems while developing essential skills. This hands-on approach enhances their understanding and prepares them for future careers.
Educators facilitate student-driven learning through structured projects aligned with industry needs. Students tackle real-world challenges, fostering critical thinking and collaboration. Field trips further connect classroom learning to practical applications.
The CoRE Learning Model is designed for all schools, accommodating various capacities and educational needs. It is suitable for primary through Year 12 students. Each program is tailored to ensure inclusivity and engagement.
Breaking down barriers in education & industry
Traditional STEM education often leaves behind the very students our industries need most. CoRE's hands-on, industry-connected approach creates genuine pathways for every learner, from metropolitan Perth to remote mining communities across Western Australia. Our numbers represent an important fundamental shift towards inclusive STEM education that represents the diversity of today's Australia.
Every pin on this map represents a community where barriers are being broken down, one student at a time. With CoRE all students see their pathway from their classroom to meaningful careers in their own communities.

Pit to Pixel
Digital Technologies program with educator mentoring, industry expertise, and resource sector focused projects for Year 9.

CoRE Schools
Earth Science program with educator mentoring, industry volunteers, field trips, and resource sector focused projects for Pre Primary - Year 10.

CoRE Academy
Science In Practice program with educator mentoring, industry volunteers, field trips, career prospects, and resource sector-focused projects for Year 11 & 12.
Pit to Pixel
A free, semester-long Year 9 Digital Technologies program connecting students to real industry professionals, real data, and real careers in WA's resources sector.

Where the classroom meets the mine site
Developed by the CoRE Learning Foundation in partnership with the WA Mining Club, Pit to Pixel puts Year 9 students into the role of Data Analysts working alongside Mining Engineers, Geologists, and Digital Specialists. This interactive simulation is a direct connection to industry, making learning relevant and fun for students.
Over one semester, students work in business units to interpret real mining data, build digital dashboards, and design solutions to challenges facing modern mining.

Student centered
Learning is driven by curiosity and ownership, not instruction, building confidence alongside technical skills.
Industry connections
Partner companies bring real problems, real mentors, and real field experiences into every program.
Community strengthened
Local students enter local industries, keeping talent in the regions that need it most.
CoRE Schools
CoRE Schools supports educators with comprehensive training and ongoing coaching, helping them build confidence in delivering hands-on, industry-connected learning. As teachers and industry partners work alongside students, schools strengthen their links with local employers and communities. CoRE helps students discover opportunities in their region, nurturing local talent and inspiring the next generation to contribute to their communities and industries.

Full STEAM Ahead
CoRE Schools connects classroom learning with the industries and communities around students. Using science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), students take part in semester-long, project-based learning built around a story that links their work to the curriculum. They spend at least four hours each week exploring authentic industry challenges, supported by field trips, industry partnerships and graduate mentors. This approach helps students see how their learning applies beyond the classroom and introduces them to future study and career pathways.
Local industry partnerships
Connected with local resources and energy sectors through mentoring programs and project design input. Adapted to regional industry and community needs.
Immersive field trips
Regular field trips to geological and mine sites bring #TheRealClassroom to life, connecting classroom learning with industry operations.
Educator development
Ongoing professional development equips educators to use innovative teaching approaches and strengthen earth science learning.
CoRE Academy
The CoRE Academy model provides Year 11-12 students with advanced STEM skills and direct pathways into resource and energy sector careers. Delivered through Science in Practice electives, the program bridges secondary education to apprenticeships, traineeships, or university study.
Regional Academies operate within existing CoRE schools supported by feeder primary schools, creating a seamless Pre Primary to Year 12 pathway.

Preparing students for
future industry success
The Pilbara CoRE Academy shows this model in action. Delivered with Tom Price Senior High School, Rio Tinto and Curtin University, it connects students’ learning from primary through senior secondary with industry challenges, mine-site visits, mentoring and university experiences. Students build their STEM knowledge while exploring opportunities to study and work in the Pilbara.
Industry mentorship opportunities
Direct access to resource and energy sector professionals sharing career insights and industry realities.
Certification and pathways
Opportunities for certifications aligned with industry demand and support for university, VET, and TAFE pathways.
Career connections
Networking opportunities, work experience placements, and direct links to apprenticeships and employment.
