Students gain CoRE Stem Learning in Class

At Merredin College, the CoRE Learning Programme is redefining STEM education through a dynamic, hands-on approach that goes beyond traditional classroom learning. This forward-thinking model connects students with real-world industry challenges through project-based learning, teamwork, and field trips that ignite curiosity and develop essential skills.

Looking back on their experiences, Year 7 and 8 students at Merredin College reflected on how CoRE has influenced their educational journeys and personal growth over the past year.

Emily, a Year 7 student, shared how the programme’s unique approach left a lasting impression:

“My first year in CoRE was excellent. It’s so different from my other classes in a good way. My favourite part was the field trip to Hopetoun because I learned so much and the mountain hike was really fun. I love the hands-on activities, and I’ve learned to think creatively and work with my friends to solve problems.”

Jordan reflected on how CoRE helped strengthen friendships:

“This year of CoRE has been great. Spending time with mates I don’t usually hang out with has helped me build new friendships. I’ve enjoyed working collaboratively in teams, and it’s been a fun and rewarding experience overall.”

Aria highlighted the impact of CoRE’s innovative learning environment:

“The hands-on learning style makes it so much better than other classes. Business Units are where we work in teams to tackle challenges. Having people to help you and encourage you with your work is the greatest feeling. CoRE has been a fantastic experience, and I hope I can continue next year.”

What Makes CoRE Different?

These students highlight the fundamental aspects of CoRE that distinguish it from conventional STEM programmes. CoRE revolutionises the way students engage with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by integrating real-world applications throughout the entire curriculum making it practical to everyday life.

  • Project-Based Learning (PBL) encourages creativity and critical thinking by challenging students to solve practical problems inspired by industry and is assessable and reportable through the West Australian Curriculum.
  • Field Trips, like the one Emily enjoyed to Hopetoun, bring theoretical concepts to life, offering memorable and impactful learning experiences.
  • Skill Development is woven into every activity, helping students build teamwork, communication, and leadership capabilities.
  • Hands-On Learning ensures students stay engaged and excited, with activities ranging from constructing models to launching rockets.

As Jordan and Aria described, these elements not only make learning more interactive but also help foster a sense of camaraderie and mutual support among students.

Why CoRE Matters for Schools

Merredin College’s experience highlights why CoRE is such a valuable addition to schools:

  • Practical STEM Learning for Careers: Students gain hands-on experience directly related to industry roles.
  • Solving Real-World Problems: Students tackle actual industry challenges in their projects.
  • Building a Talent Pipeline: It develops future industry leaders with critical STEM skills.
  • Developing Confidence and Skills: Students gain the skills and confidence needed for STEM careers.

The Future of STEM Learning

For many of Merredin College’s students, CoRE has been a transformative experience. As Amelia explained:

“CoRE has helped me step out of my comfort zone and build confidence in ways I never imagined. I’ve loved the hands-on activities, and I can’t wait to continue next year.”

CoRE offers a powerful vision for the future of STEM education, combining collaboration, innovation, and real-world connections to inspire the next generation of leaders. If your school is ready to take the leap, explore how CoRE can bring these exciting opportunities to your students.
