Pit to Pixel: Connecting Modern Mining to Digital Technologies Classrooms in 2027

The CoRE Learning Foundation and the WA Mining Club proudly present Pit to Pixel, a FREE, purpose-driven Year 9 Digital Technologies program. This program incorporates our award-winning CoRE Learning Model to help prepare students for careers in the future resources sector.
Turn your Classroom into a Real Mining Operation
Across one semester, Year 9 students take on a fun digital tech project that mirrors modern mining challenges. Students interpret mining data, using digital tools to design practical solutions.
The program framework is customisable and encourages student-centred learning. The program is flexible so that you can tailor it to your classroom requirements. Whether you are introducing basic data knowledge to beginners or diving into complex topics with advanced learners, the customisation of the program ensures that the content remains exciting and relevant.
Everything is mapped to the new SCSA Year 9 Digital Technologies curriculum. The program provides a practical way for you to transition to the new curriculum requirements, while incorporating ready-to-use activities that appeal to a broad range of students.

What Happens When Students Take the Lead?
Pit to Pixel takes students on a learning journey that connects STEM skills with purpose. Over the semester, students step into the shoes of a “Data Analyst” who works alongside Mine Geologists, Mining Operations, and Safety Officers.
Over the course of the program, 73% of students in our Semester 1 cohort rated themselves as capable, proficient, or complete masters of spreadsheet and data visualisation tools.
Students also strengthened vital STEM skills. Over 60% reported improvements in problem-solving, alongside boosts in teamwork, presentation confidence, and digital communication.
Before the program began, less than half of students had an interest in STEM and resource careers. By completion, 79% reported an increased interest, with 64% interested in high-tech, emerging roles.

A Future-Focused Partnership
For more than 50 years, the WA Mining Club has been at the heart of Western Australia’s resources sector. With a shared commitment to growing future resource industry leaders, they’re helping CoRE connect students with mining professionals and industry experts. Throughout the program, students work in business units to interpret real industry data, build digital dashboards, and explore how STEM and technology are used in day-to-day operations in the resources sector.
What's exciting about Pit to Pixel is how clearly students enjoy the program when they see how their learning applies to real people. Through CoRE’s strong partnerships between education and industry, students understand how STEM skills are essential to the future of mining.
