History in the Making at Baler Primary School

History is officially in the making at Baler Primary School. This year marks a monumental milestone for our community as they become the first school to implement the CoRE Learning Model across every single primary school classroom.

From our youngest Pre-Primary explorers to our graduating Year 6 leaders, the entire school is diving headfirst into a new era of STEM education.

A New Era of STEM Learning

Together with 23 dedicated CoRE Educators, Baler’s 529 students are turning their primary school into "the real classroom”, giving local students hands-on STEM experiences and connecting their daily lessons to real-world careers in the resources sector. While CoRE has already been inspiring students in the Pilbara for years, this whole-school approach represents a significant milestone in expanding the reach of project-based STEM learning.

A Glimpse Into the Action

The projects lined up for this year are nothing short of extraordinary.

Some cohorts will ‘time-travel’ 66 million years ago to investigate the Chicxulub impact and its planetary effects. Others are looking ahead to the future. They will use real-world learning to engineer innovative solutions to support future industries.

Learning won't be confined to four walls. We have some thrilling field trips planned to give every student a first-hand look at the mining industry in action. Through Baler’s 3 years with CoRE, we’ve taken their students to the Port Hedland Port, Rio Tinto’s Salt Mine, Pretty Pool Park, Cemetery Beach, and Finucane Island.

Building a Local Talent Pipeline

CoRE ensures that regional students have access to high-quality opportunities that mirror real industry environments. Bringing real industry professionals into the classroom helps connect student learning to real-world careers.

Last year, volunteers from CoRE sponsor PLS, visited Baler Primary School to discuss with students the real-world opportunities that STEM learning provides.

Together with legacy partner BHP and support from the local Port Hedland community, we are bringing equitable access to STEM education to this remote school community.

It’s not just the students who are growing; teachers at Baler are also gaining professional development opportunities that strengthen STEM delivery across the school, ensuring this innovative approach is woven into every classroom. CoRE Educators receive quarterly, in-person professional development sessions, supporting their program delivery.

Follow Our Journey

This is just the beginning of a transformative year for Baler Primary School. We are incredibly proud of our students and educators for embracing this ambitious leap into the CoRE Learning Model.

We look forward to sharing updates throughout the year as these emerging professionals showcase their projects, complete their field trips, and develop the critical thinking, teamwork, and confidence needed to shape their future careers.
